Stepping Stones Inpatient Program for Children and Adolescents

CenterPointe Hospital of Columbia features an inpatient program designed specifically for young people who are suffering from serious emotional concerns. Children and adolescents who participate in our Stepping Stones inpatient program receive focused care that can help them begin to live healthier, happier lives.

Child & Adolescent Inpatient Program Overview

Located in Columbia, Missouri, we offer a warm, welcoming space where children and adolescents can heal. We understand that finding care for a young person in need can be overwhelming for families, and we do our best to put patients and their loved ones at ease when they seek help from us.

To provide our young patients with the services they need in the environment that best supports them, we offer inpatient programming in two units:

  • Our child unit accepts patients ages 10-12.
  • Our adolescent unit serves patients ages 13-17.

Within each of these units, we offer evidence-based therapies for children or adolescents who are suffering from a variety of emotional concerns, including:

  • Major depression
  • Anxiety
  • Hallucinations
  • Anger or rage
  • Repercussions of trauma
  • Severe attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Erratic mood swings
  • Self-harm
  • Suicidal ideation and behaviors
  • Homicidal ideation and behaviors

Typically, a young person remains in this program for seven to 10 days. But each person’s length of stay is determined by our staff.

Therapies & Services

Each child or adolescent in our Stepping Stones inpatient program receives a comprehensive assessment that helps our team better understand their individual needs. With this information, we can customize their care to best support them.

Common therapies and services offered in our inpatient program include:

  • Family counseling
  • Group therapy sessions that cover topics like coping skills, problem-solving skills, developing enhanced self-awareness, asking for and receiving support, and recognizing unhealthy behaviors
  • Experiential therapies such as art therapy and music therapy
  • Basic medical care
  • Medication management services
  • Detoxification

At CenterPointe Hospital of Columbia, we focus on teaching young people coping strategies that can help them transition back to their daily routines efficiently. We believe that through age-appropriate programming, children and adolescents can learn to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

Our Admissions Process

We require each potential patient to participate in an initial assessment to help us determine if our services are the right fit for them. Evaluations can be completed in person or over the phone at any time of day.

If you are a parent or guardian of a child or adolescent who may benefit from our programming, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team of caring admissions counselors today. They can help you schedule an assessment for your child as well as answer any questions you may have regarding the admissions process.

If we decide that another provider may be a better fit for your child’s needs, we can provide a referral to a trusted facility. We strive to help each young person who is suffering from emotional concerns find the care they need as quickly as possible.

I can’t thank the doctors and staff on the adolescent unit enough for helping my teenage son resolve his anger and confusion. He had lost all interest in school and was making poor decisions that could have led to permanent damage. I am so happy to have my son back!
